Essay

The Middle Ages still remains little known and complicated period in the history of Ukraine. The most important political act became appearing of Ancient Rus. The official adoption and extension of Christianity, consolidation of Ukrainian statehood and other acts encourage growth of international authority of ancient state. At the same time the period of the Middle Ages became severe trial for Ukrainian nation that in consequence of many factors was deprived of the ability of national, political, economic, cultural and religious development. Constant armed conflicts on the territory of Ukraine and its periodic dividing between foreign conquerors complicated evolution of national, public, political, cultural, educational, productive, religious and other institutions. The Ukrainian monkhood found themselves in complicated social and political medieval circumstances. The process of monasteries appearing turn out to be not a simple phenomenon. The creators of monasteries were impropriateors and clergymen, monks and some monks-anahorets and even locals. Except important spiritual mission monks promoted new writing in Ukrainian society, founded schools, hospitals, developed education, culture, art, social ethics, Christian traditions, new customs, tendencies of production, give social help and support of the population and many other important elements of social being. Special social status of monkhood and the activity of medieval monasteries attracted attention of many authors. The first prompts of the scientific comprehension of monkhood phenomenon were made in the nineteenth century by M. Matsievskyi, M. Kossak, Y. Golovatskyi, I. Vagylevych and other researchers. Various aspects of existence and the activity of medieval Ukrainian monasteries in Halychyna in particular outstanding Ukrainian historians, etnologists, archeologists, art critics and statesmen: M. Hrushevskyi, V. Antonovych, I. Krypyakevych, V. Karpovych, A. Pasternak, I. Ohienko, I.Franko and others.
