Essay

The dissertation concerns Ukrainian building rites, the part of traditional daily culture which has been studied very little until now. Using a basic sources the author reconstructed the complex of rituals and traditions which followed ethnic dwelling building. An important part of dissertation includes the analysis of its semantics – in particular those tokens and divinations, that are connected with the selection of building materials, place and time of construction, outlook concepts about master builder, construction sakrifice, construction tree, and housewarming customs and traditions.
