The dissertation deals with the studying of psychological peculiarities of reading and understanding of fiction by senior pupils. Theoretical and methodological grounds of reading activity of the person were determined. The possibilities of pedagogical regulation of this process were described. In the dissertation the normative model of reading and understanding of fiction by senior pupils was worked out. The components of reading activity of pupils were formed. They are: cognitive, communicative, subject-oriented. The context of these components was described. The possibilities of using the category of dialogue in the process of analyzing of reading activity of pupils were shown. The kinds of dialogisms were formed (subordinate, coordinative, subject-reflexive). The psychological mechanisms of understanding of fiction by senior pupils were determined. They are: mechanisms of apperception, projection, eidetizms, identification, introection. Conceptual and methodical background of the research of reading and understanding of fiction by senior pupils was worked out. Five aspects of such understanding were described. They are: reproductive, rationally-logical, emotionally-valued, expressive and socially-cultural. The system of psychological and pedagogical influences by the teacher on senior pupils with the aim to facilitate understanding of fiction by schoolchildren was determined.
