Mykhaylyshyn O. The Development of Architecture in the Interwar Volyn under the Socio-Cultural Transformations of the XX century

The aim of the study is to find out the peculiarities and regularities of the architecture development in Volyn during 1921-1939 in the context of socio-cultural transformations of the XX century. Object of the study - Volyn architecture in 1921-1939 in its complex view. Purpose of the study - typological structure of architectural-planning activity; spatial-planning, compositional, artistic and stylistic, morphological peculiarities of architectural objects, which are considered in the socio-cultural context of Volyn in 1921-1939. Research methods. For the consideration of architecture in Volyn as a unique phenomenon in Ukrainian architectural history, which is characterized by complex object and typological structure, the following approaches are used: phenomenological, semantic, civilizational. The socio-cultural dimension of architectural development caused the usage of sociological and culturological approaches, aimed at finding out the adaptation mechanisms of architecture as a cultural subsystem to the changing social conditions and, vice versa, at the definition of the influence rate of architectural activity results on the character and directions of socio-cultural transformations. The research also uses such methods: typological; historical and genetic; modeling method; graphologic-analytical method. The scientific novelty of the results lies in complex consideration and analysis of Volyn architecture in the interwar period as a complex phenomenon and multi-aspect process, which was developing in the conditions of socio-cultural transformations. The new result is the introduction of numerous primary sources from national and foreign archive collections to the scientific use. Besides, the novelty of the scientific research lies in the following facts: broadening of object and purpose research field of Ukrainian architecture in the XX century; introduction of a new methodological approach on the basis of methods integration of sociological and culturological approaches, which allows to consider the development of architecture in the mutual relation and precondition with the socio-cultural dynamics of society; finding out the complex of political-ideological, socioeconomic and historical-cultural preconditions, which defined the specific way of the development of architecture in Volyn in the 1920-30s; first-time analysis of the methods and means of spatial-planning, compositional and architectural-stylistic modernization of architectural space for visualizing the socio-cultural changes in Volyn cities; first-time conduction of the comparative research of form-creating principles in the temples of different confessions, adjustment of the object catalog; definition of the directions and methodological approaches to the preservation of architectural monuments, of the methods of scientific analysis of valuable architectural objects and their complexes in the researched period; first-time role and place determination of Volyn architecture of the interwar period in the European and national architectural process.
