Essay

The dissertation deals with the complex study of the formation and development of the Ukrainian choral movement in the 19th - the early 21st century. It also focuses on mental and historical foundations of Ukrainian choral art, essential peculiarities of Ukrainian choral movement as a sociocultural phenomenon and highlights the bases of the enlightenment in choirs' activity. The author characterizes the peculiarities of the choral movement in Galicia and Naddnipryanshchyna in the 19th and 20th century, points out key factors having impact on the development of national choral life during the period of Independent Ukraine. The dissertation also suggests the definition of "choral movement", characterizes a choir as a model of national society, periodizes the choral movement of the 20th century, points out similar and distinct features of its development in Western and eastern Ukraine, clarifies the content, forms and peculiarities of choirs' concert performance activity in the following directions: professional (academic, folk, church) and amateur (church, folk).
