Essay

The thesis focuses on the food supply arrangements in the contaminated territories after the accident at nuclear power plants, by using radioactively non-polluted foods in the radiological defense support system. There were substantiated criteria to minimize radiation risks as a basis for protecting the health of people dwelling in the contaminated territories at different stages of a major radiation accident. Providing the dwellers of the contaminated territories with radioactively non-polluted foods was found to be insufficient as for the time and duration of usage, the amount and variety of foods. The real supply of the contaminated territories dwellers with non-polluted foods was proved not to have a positive influence on the formation of internal radiation doses obtained by one million people population in the contaminated territories in the radiological defense support system. The effect of contaminated foods consumption on the incidence of endocrine disorders and thyroid gland diseases was established. The concept of provision with radioactively non-polluted foods in the radiological defense support system was significantly expanded. There were developed recommendations on food supply arrangements in order to prevent internal exposure of the population through the consumption of radioactively non-polluted foods in early and late radiation accident.
