The thesis presents a comprehensive study of interpersonal communication, in particular, in the aspect of intercultural interaction on the material of Ukrainian, English, and Polish languages. In the paper the theory of effective interpersonal interaction has been introduced to specify both direct and indirect means of appropriate communicative behaviour. The investigation has led to the functional-pragmatic typology of communicative genres based on the communicative maxims. The dissertation has proved that the effective use of language deals with the communicative maxims which are fundamentally non-conventional, i.e. they are motivated in terms of conversational goals. Communicative maxims are observed up to a certain point. Therefore, a pragmatic paradox sometimes can arise through the non-agreement maxims, in particular, in the situations of everyday interpersonal communication, also in the interaction in different language cultures. The linguocultural ethnic specifics of the communicative genres in Ukrainian, English, and Polish have been highlighted. The research work on the interpersonal communication has moved from the relatively firm ground - the communicative maxims - to a more uncertain area where it is focused on the indirectness as the communicative strategy and on the role of different implicit means in the hinting strategy. The notion of silence as the powerful pragmatic means of interpersonal communication is considered to be one of the most important implicit forms of the interpersonal interaction. The study of the functional-pragmatic peculiarities of implicit information includes aspects of appealing to the common knowledge and ideas about reality, different kinds of presuppositions in comparison with other implicit components of an utterance. The conducted research has proved the connection between effectiveness of interpersonal interaction and the indirectness, obliquity. In the hinting strategy the meaning is manifested not only in the content of conversation but also in the way conversation is managed and structured by its participants. Therefore, the speaker's utterance meaning is quite different from the sentence meaning. In this respect the idea of conversational implicature and ambiguity have been determined and investigated in the research. The thesis focuses on studying the role of such a specific implicit device as irony in the hinting strategy. Moreover, a distinction between irony as the linguistic phenomenon and as a stylistic device has been suggested.
