Essay

Methodological background for researching capital metropolises' competitive development under conditions of globalization has been generalized. Evolutionary stages of capital-cities' transformation have been grounded, also the interdisciplinary identification of capital-cities as the subjects of international competitive relations has been provided. Paradigmatic approaches to identifying the quality of the creative city's development have been elaborated, particularly through the study of gravitational processes of human capital concentration, sectoral transformation of the capital cities and their creativization. Directions of metropolis identification concepts' genesis have been discovered: metropolis as industrial production site, as institutional core of national economy, as the epicentre of the production of knowledge and innovation. The study uncovers the core features of the European model of building competitive advantages for capital cities in the regional hierarchy of the European Union. The influence of exogenous and endogenous factors on the development of European cities, as well as metropolitan character of the EU economy localization has been assessed. Researcher performed the structural identification of Kyiv in the European economic model of cities' development. This allowed identifying the positioning peculiarities of the Ukrainian capital, analyzing the areas of structural transformation of the city, as well as the character of its creative modernization. Conceptual guidelines of international development strategy have been elaborated for Kyiv. They include rapid modernization of capital's infrastructure, as well as implementation of effective mechanisms to improve its international competitiveness.
