Essay

The thesis resolved the actual scientific problem of substantiating and developing a system of perioperative patient safety in anesthesiology and intensive care, the main paradigm of which being the modern concept of a safety system as a closed cycle of building and improving barriers to medical errors and adverse events, the main modules being 8 groups of safety tools corresponding to the established 8 priorities of the domestic anesthesiology and intensive care service in the field of patient safety, the structural components being health care institutions, medical educational institutions, public organizations, and patients, and the logistic elements being integration, continuity, succession, and feedback. The system is developed on the basis of the obtained data on: the existence of latent threats to the perioperative patient safety embedded in structural-functional organization and in architectural, engineering, and logistical components of the anesthesiology and intensive care service of Ukraine; low level of perioperative processes standardization in the service; extremely low, in comparison with the statistics from developed countries of the world, frequency of registration of adverse perioperative events in domestic anesthetic practice, as well as on the basis of the results of a critical analysis of existing in the world evidence-based organizational technologies to improve the safety of medical care. Conceptual approaches to the implementation of the system of perioperative patient safety in the anesthesiology and intensive care service of Ukraine at the national, regional, and local levels are suggested.
