Essay

The dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic activity of the Ukrainian community of Galicia in the interwar period, presenting it as a complex phenomenon. The research analyses ethnical and demographic processes as well as social structure of the population of Galicia, with the aim to outline the economic potential of the Galician region. The place of Galicia in the European economic environment was determined by the following factors: agricultural and industrial production, trade balance, rate of foreign investments, source of raw materials, professional workforce, etc. Galicia was famous for exporting timber, agricultural products, and, due to being rich in natural resources and the development of oil industry, was associated with California which had rich oil fields. Having realized that economic self-organization is an essential component of the political autonomy, the Ukrainians got impetus to actively participate in the social and economic life. What is more, economic problems had started to be paid attention to when drawing up the programmes of the Ukrainian political parties and organizations.
