Essay

The research is dedicated to translation quality assessment and its present expanded range of epistemic methods. It provides an insightful outline of the history and current state of translation theory, criticism and analysis by tracing the formation of ideas about translation and its analysis in Ukraine, considering the state of translation criticism in the early 21st century, analyzing the major existing views on the contrasting procedures of the original and the translation, and developing the definition of the term translation quality assessment. The epistemic background of the study lies in the domains of postpositivism and constructivism. The history of translating Early Ukrainian literature into Modern Ukrainian (the 19th to early 21st centuries) and English (the 18th to early 21st centuries) has been scrutinized for defining the corpus of the research as well as for identifying crucial historical and literary phenomena. The related theoretical issues of this research are the elucidation of the features of intralingual translation and the explanation of the status of religious translation as a separate branch of translation studies. The author has introduced, elaborated and verified a number of cognitive, communicative, sociocultural, literary and historical concepts for revealing the historical and cultural potential of textual interpretation.
