Essay

The completed dissertation is a complex linguistic study of Ukrainian rhyme, which initiates and develops a new direction of Ukrainian linguistic studies, i.e. linguistic rhymology and its practical branch – rhymography. For the first time, a linguistic theory of Ukrainian rhyme was proposed, substantiated and presented, which is based on the understanding of rhyme as a system unit. Grounding on a retrospective analysis of rhyme definitions, the following stages of Ukrainian rhymology have been singled out: 1) the end of the 16th till the end of the 18th centuries; 2) the 19th century – the beginning of the 20th century; 3) the 1920's – the middle of the 20th century; 4) the second half of the 20th century; 5) the beginning of the 21st century. It is concluded that the term rhyme covers the notions of: ‘final-sound similarity of words as a manifestation of rhyming creativity of language’; ‘sound similarity of words of verse lines’; ‘stylistic technique of using sound similarity of words in the poetic text’; ‘phonemic complex common to several rhyming words’; ‘rhyme pair or chain’. It is substantiated that the important tools of artistic mastering the reality and re-thinking the knowledge about the world are artistic attribute, comparison, metaphor and artistic definition. It is revealed that the metaphorization of rhyme occurs through the projection of the conceptual spheres ‘man’, ‘society’, ‘nature’, and ‘artifacts’. A number of metaphorical models have been established.
