Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the research of paradigmatic differentiation of national banking systems, which have largely developed historically, and methodological aspects of their evolution in the conditions of global transformations. The purpose of the dissertation research is to analyze the functional and institutional features of banking systems of the main “centers” of world economy. The own conceptual approach to the analysis of the evolution of banking systems in the conditions of global transformations as an institutional environment for modern macroeconomic processes has been formed, the mechanisms of formation and realization of intermediary activity of commercial banks in the world financial environment have been clarified, methodological aspects of ensuring the efficiency and competitiveness of banking systems have been improved. It is proved that the paradigmatic basis in the Anglo-Saxon banking sphere lies in the theoretical provisions, methodological principles and institutional mechanisms of neoclassical economic doctrine; the Keynesian (post-Keynesian) scientific paradigm prevails in the European continental banking system; the paradigm of the Islamic banking system is interdisciplinary, which consists in the use, on the one hand, of Sharia law in the context of ethics and morals and economic principles and, on the other, of laws that ensure the optimal functioning of banking institutions in view of socially important goals and objectives of the banking sector of a large group of Islamic countries. The conseptualisation of paradigm evolution of modern banking systems under the conditions of greater openness of the economy to capital flows and the gradual convergence of the institutional architecture and regulatory regime of certain groups of countries, which previously differed significantly in approaches to the organization of financial intermediation has been carried out; it has been found that globalization has led to the expected convergence of lending volumes only in European countries (this testifies to the effectiveness of institutional mechanisms of European integration). The methodology of economic and statistical analysis of qualitative characteristics of banking systems, which takes into account the mutual influence between lending volumes, consumer prices and GDP in terms of individual groups of countries and time periods has been proposed. Based on the obtained empirical estimates, it was found that with the onset of globalization, the favorable impact of lending on GDP has largely increased (except for continental Europe), including the period 2010–2019, while in a post-crisis environment with low interest rates, the inflationary impact of the increase in lending is disappearing in the countries of the Anglo-Saxon and continental groups and in Southern Europe. The basic functional connections of the banking sector of Ukraine have been identified, which allowed to propose a holistic concept of the domestic banking system development based on such structural characteristics as increasing domestic savings, gradually reducing the share of state banks, attracting foreign banks, strengthening banking supervision and taking into account economic environment.
