Essay

The thesis is devoted to analyzing the processes of interaction between two approximately isomorphic functional systems: on the one hand, the systems of verbal communication “Latin-popular languages” and, on the other hand, the systems of culture as a semiotic system divided into subcultures. For the first time the system of language and culture has been described as a whole (the linguo-cultural space of Medival Western Europe). The comparison with some Byzantine material and with the linguistic situation of late antiguity, on the one hand, and with that of Renaissance - on the other, has made the establishment og territorial and chronological linitations of medieval linguo-cultural axiological vertical possible. The internal transformations of the West European linguo-cultural axiological space during the transition from antiquity to Middle Ages consist in changing its main structural space during the transition from antiquity to Middle Ages consist in changing its main structural dimension from horiz ontal to vertical (or hierarchic). The “higher” and “lower” subcultures created during this period combine the elements of the language of culture according to the possible models called here clericality “plus” or “minus” Latin antiquity.
