Essay

The author proves that phraseological units belong to the lexical system and to the lexical level of a languege; establishes the place of phraseology in the system of linguistic disciplines. A new approach is suggested to the definition of the system on the basic of such notions as the functional field, the functional exhaustion, and the regularity of phraseological units interaction. The author defines a phraseological unit, irrespective of its structural-grammar composition, as a virtual sign of the language system from a position of general phraseology. Proof is given that modelling, as a unity of the typical structure and the typical meaning, is not characteristic of phraseological units.
