Essay

The object of the research is the process of developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening. The aim of the research is to substantiate the theoretical background, to elaborate and verify the effectiveness of the methodology of developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening. Scientific novelty of the research lies in theoretical substantiation and elaboration of the methodology of developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening (with a due regard of the influence of musical abilities on foreign language acquisition) , which aims to prepare prospective music specialists for understanding and using professionally oriented English lexical items in professional communicative situations and proceeds throughout four stages (introductory, semantization, training, final assessing) of in-class activities; usage of a sub-system of tasks and activities which envisages achieving objectives of each corresponding stage; specification of linguistic and psychological peculiarities as well as the principles of developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening; improvement of the criteria for selecting educational material to develop prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening; further development of the assessment of the level of professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening. The practical significance of the obtained results includes: selecting the teaching material (professionally oriented audio texts, lexical items and songs) and lexical minimum for the development and improvement of professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening; working out a tutorial manual consisting of the elaborated sub-system of tasks and activities and giving methodological recommendations for the teachers of the English language who work with music specialties students regarding effective organization of the educational process. The first section deals with the analysis of scientific methodological prerequisites for developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening using systemic, paradigmatic, chronological, self-oriented and communicative approaches. The effect of musical abilities on foreign language learning has been studied. Mental processes, internal and external motivation, anticipation and realization, individual psychological characteristics of the target group as well as interlingual peculiarities of the music vocabulary and patterns of word identification in listening have been analysed. In the second section the units of educational material selection have been determined (audio texts, video messages and lexical items). The criteria for educational material selection to develop prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening are defined as following: authenticity, professional orientation, compliance with syllabus requirements, informative and motivational value, frequency of usage of selected lexical items, opportunity to guess lexical meaning of a lexical item, availability and feasibility, length of a text for listening, speech rate, phonetic and acoustic features of a message; professional lexical items – topicality, frequency, functionality, ability for word formation, terminological significance; songs – frequency of usage of selected lexical items, availability and feasibility, genre diversity, motivational value. The analysis of scientific methodological sources enabled to outline four stages of developing the prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening: introductory, semantization; training and final assessing. The thematic cyclic model of developing prospective music specialists’ professionally oriented English lexical competence in listening has been elaborated. The third describes the methodological experiment and interpretation of its results. The variable value of the experiment was the way of presenting and semantizing of the new lexical items. According to variant A, semantization of new vocabulary was made by translation into native (Ukrainian) language. In variant B, semantization of the key vocabulary was done within a video message, and afterwards, it was explained with definitions. To validate the obtained results of the experiment, Fisher’s angular transformation was used. It indicated a greater efficiency of the variant B of the methodology.
