Essay

The object of research is the system of checks and balances between the branches of government as an attribute of democracy. Methodological basis of the study. The complex nature of the studied problem led to choose a number of general approaches and research methods. Accordingly, the methodological basis of the dissertation research is formed by a combination of a number of approaches, namely a systemic, structural-functional, behaviorist and pluralistic approach to the interpretation of the phenomenon of democracy. Within the outlined approaches general scientific, empirical and logical research methods were used. Among general scientific methods the most important methods are systemic, structural-functional, comparative, historical, prognostic. The application of the indexing method, which was used to develop the author’s method of calculating the index of the balance of powers between branches of state power (IB) has played an important role in our research. Scientific novelty of the obtained results. The dissertation is the first comprehensive and thorough study of the checks and balances system as an attribute of democracy in the context of Ukraine’s political system democratization in domestic political science. The practical significance of the obtained results is determined by scientific novelty and relevance; it consists in the possibility of applying the results of thesis for research and educational purposes.
