Essay

The dissertation focuses on the analysis of the phenomenon of intertextuality and its English-Ukrainian translation from a cognitive linguistics perspective. The novelty of the dissertation lies in the analysis of intertextual units in the context of frame semantics and the theory of dynamic memory by R. Schank. Its novel contributions are as follows: the definition of intertextuality as a cognitive category from the perspective of frame semantics and the theory of dynamic memory is proposed; the concepts “quotation”, “allusion”, “echo” are defined based on the degree of correspondence between intertextual and textual frames; the procedure for a linguo-cognitive translation analysis of intertextual units is developed; linguo-cognitive translation techniques applied to the translation of intertextual units are defined and described. The study employs the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the theory of intertextuality (M. Bakhtin, Y. Kristeva, U. Eco, A. Popovich, N. Pyege-Gros, N. Fateieva, O. Yarema), cognitive linguistics (R. Langacker, G. Lakoff, L. Talmy, M. Johnson, R. Gibbs, Ch. Fillmore, W. Wood, E. Croft, A. Verhagen), cognitive poetics (Z. Kövecses, Z. Ben-Porat, T. Karpenko-Seccombe), cognitive translatology (A. Neubert, G. Shreve, P. Kussmaul, P. Sickinger, A. Rojo López, B. Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, T.Yansen-Fesenko, O. Dzera, V. Nikonova), the theory of dynamic memory (R. Schank), the theory of perceptual symbol systems (L. Barsalou), simulation semantics (B. Bergen, R. Zwaan). The presented study of the translation of intertextual units from English into Ukrainian in light of cognitive translatology allowed to draw a number of conclusions. A linguo-cognitive approach, which emphasizes the cognitive basis of intertextual connections and provides tools for analyzing the textual representation of mental structures and processes that underlie them, combines broad and narrow definitions of intertextuality. Intertextuality is broadly defined as a cognitive category that can be studied through intertextual units (a narrow view).
