Essay

Given the significant interest in medicinal plants and their use in medicine, the question of finding new promising plants or rethinking the use of long-known ones is relevant. One of the promising plants for detailed pharmacognostic research is camalus. In many countries of the world the rhizome of calamus is an official medicinal raw material. The use of rhizomes, despite the diverse composition of biologically active substances, which causes a large number of pharmacological effects, is limited to pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract. However, numerous studies, the results of which have been published in prestigious scientific journals, indicate that this medicinal plant has extremely great medical and pharmacological potential. Some foreign authors point to a significant similarity between the qualitative composition and quantitative content of the aboveground and underground parts of the Acorus calamus. At the same time, today only the rhizome of the plant is used in official medicine. Given the fact that in the last decade the natural range of the species is narrowing, the use of leaves as additional raw materials is promising. All this creates the preconditions for a more in-depth pharmacognostic study of this plant. Given that the regulatory and analytical documentation used in Ukraine is outdated, does not take into account the variability of the chemical composition of the plant depending on the place of growth and does not meet modern methods of quality control, the issue of drafting a monograph " Acori calami rhisomataN" and its introduction to the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine is actual.
