Essay

The completed theses is a comprehensive study of precedent phenomena in the modern Ukrainian language: its sources, structures and receptions. The scientific novelty of the research results is that for the first time a linguo-cultural and linguocognitive analysis of headlines with precedent phenomena of the Ukrainian language discourse of the mass media of 2014 – 2018 was carried out. The differential features of the basic concepts of cognitive linguistics are specified, in particular the linguistic differences between the precedent phenomenon and the precedent language unit are characterized. The source of precedent phenomena’s modern media discourse base is structured, as well as neo-precedent phenomena are singled out as mentefacts, fixing a new slice of knowledge as a result of understanding the realities of today. The presence of the phenomenon of polyprecedence has been recorded, which, on the one hand, may be a consequence of the functioning of polyprecedent phenomena or, on the other hand, may occur during the creation of polyprecedent headlines. The associative fields of frequency precedent phenomena are modeled and the nationally marked semantic components are singled out. An integrated approach to the study of precedent phenomena recorded in a certain period of development of the linguistic and cultural community, allowed to determine its moral and ethical, socio-economic, historical and cultural, and others priorities. The analysis of the essence of terms intertextuality and precedenсе actively used in cognitive-discourse research motivated the commonality and difference of their features. Precedence is defined as the property of human consciousness to use in the created texts verbal and nonverbal (paralingual) signs-symbols (precedent phenomena), which are carriers of semantic information relevant to the bearers of a certain linguistic culture in a particular period of its development. The main components, or units, of the common core of knowledge and ideas for all members of the linguistic and cultural community, are recognized in the dissertation as precedent phenomena: 2) relevant in cognitive (cognitive and emotional) terms; 3) constantly updated in the language of representatives of one or another national-linguistic-cultural community. It was proposed to introduce the term polyprecedence, which refers to the phenomenon, the essence of which lies in the multi-vector connection with the sources of precedent, which is manifested both at the level of precedent phenomena and at the level of text (headline). Two forms of polyprecedence are differentiated: a polyprecedent phenomenon (a precedent language unit with more than one source of origin) and a polyprecedent title (a text constructed from more than one precedent language unit). The characterization of the spheres-sources in the dissertation became a means of describing the mentality of the speaker as a whole (both the author and the reader), as a means of establishing their linguistic and cultural values and priorities. In the dissertation 7 spheres-sources of precedence are singled out. Each sphere is qualified as a multistructural phenomenon, in which as a result of qualitative and quantitative analysis the subspheres and zones-sources of origin are singled out, which in the minds of speakers are represented by precedent personalities and precedent texts, actualized in communicative-discursive reality by precedent names, precedent quotations or precedent statements, precedent situations. The phenomena, the appearance of which is connected with the events of modern history, with the actual present, which creates the historical-cultural, political, socio-economic background of their comprehension and the conditions of explication by the speakers, are called neoprecedent. A separate group of neoprecedent nationally marked nominative units – socionyms, which name a group of people or an individual by socio-psychological, moral and ethical behavior in certain political conditions, was differentiated. Their national labeling also points to a unique prehistory, where generalized-evaluative, emotionally-expressive, figurative-metaphorical connotations are rooted. The associative experiment allowed to determine the place and significance of the precedent phenomenon in the cognitive base of the modern speaker. The signs of precedent phenomena that are part of the cognitive base of modern speakers are revealed, as well as the associative field of the headline-stimulus is constructed, the nationally conditioned components reflected in it are established. As a result of the directed experiment, the awareness of the national labeling of precedent phenomena by the bearers of Ukrainian linguistic culture was recorded, despite the different nature and semantic complexity of the headlines (monoprecedent, polyprecedent headlines, headlines with polyprecedent phenomenon (a)).
