Essay

The relevance of the study determines by the orientation of modern linguistic studies to solve the problem of holistic stylistic analysis of the novel, in particular, to explore free indirect discourse (FID). The expediency of studying FID as an important component of the stylistic structure of O. Solzhenitsyn’s novel «In the First Circle» is due to the significance of this novel, it is the complex and original structure, dynamic connections of FID with other elements of composition, principles of speech expression, a system of artistic images. In a certain aspect, the stylistics of the novel has not yet been consistently studied. The scientific novelty is that the study analyzed the linguistic and stylistic means of story construction in the novel «In the First Circle». For the first time, free indirect discourse as the basis of the novel’s structure has been systematically studied. It is proved that the free indirect discourse formation is a complex combination of different characters’ voices with each other and with the narrator’s voice. The involvement of the conceptual/generalizing plane presupposes creative contact with the implicit reader, who not only understands and perceives the author's intentions but also participates in plot situations. The research is a contribution to the theory of free indirect discourse. The study traces Its’ features as the main forms of narration/speech of different characters of the novel, the author-narrator, and narrator. The specificity of the transitions from two-subject communication to the extended monologue of one of the communicants with the author’s remarks, which thus characterizes the protagonist is emphasized within the dialogic speech. The one-content and multi-content communication is emphasized within the polylogue.
