Essay

The thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in the field of study 035 “Philology”. The purpose of the study is to determine the genesis, ideological and artistic preconditions and to identify the originality of the poetics of Paul Eluard "picto-poetry" in the anthology "Free Hands". The research methodology is conditioned by a wide range of tasks and involves a combination of classical and modern methods of analysis. The scientific novelty of the dissertation is due to the fact that the thesis is the first experience in Ukrainian literary studies of a combined study of the specifics of P. Eluard and Man Ray "picto-poetry" as a phenomenon of surreal poetic art on the example of the anthology "Free Hands" and is a contribution to the classification of surreal genres. The dissertation analyzes the aesthetics of surrealism in the context of theoretical understanding of intermediality, the current state of literary interpretation of the concept of "picto-poésie", the nature and main directions of the study of Paul Eluard "picto-poetry" in foreign and Ukrainian science. In addition, the process of the poet's assimilation of surrealist canons and the formation in his poetry of innovative principles of creating a poetic reality on the way to "picto-poetry" was studied. We reflected on the experience of P. Eluard and Man Ray in creating a unique, innovative phenomenon that changed the established notion of the connection between text and image in a poetic work, which allowed us to rethink the meaning of "illustration" in literature. The presented research will help to form an idea of the peculiarities of intermedial poetry as a phenomenon of literature of transition periods, its genre, ideological and poetic identity, it will clarify the place and role of surrealism in the gradual development of literary forms and will see possible prospects for creative perception of surrealist innovations.
