The thesis aims at studying structural-semantic and functional peculiarities of the complex sentence with verbs of volition in Early Modern English. It highlights structural-semantic and functional properties of the complex sentence with finite / infinitive complementation of verbs of volition in the 16-th – 17-th centuries. The paper reveals basic tendencies of the complex sentence formation taking into account the processes of grammaticalization and language shifts in the leading periods of English language development, namely in Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English. The analysis of structural-semantic and functional features of the investigated complex sentence with clausal complement constructions is carried out from the standpoint of the generative grammar, in particular, based on the X-bar theory.
