Solovei D. Linguistic and cultural adaptation of Gospel texts for a multigenerational audience (Italian and Ukrainian translation traditions)

The research is dedicated to studying the Linguistic and cultural adaptation of Gospel texts for a multigenerational audience (Italian and Ukrainian translation traditions). The concept of cultural adaptation and its significance in the translation of biblical texts has been defined. The problems of cultural adaptation in the translation of biblical texts have been examined. The scientific novelty of the dissertation lies in the the fact that the linguo-pragmatic adaptation of the synodal translation of biblical texts in multi-genre graphic prose has prospects for studying language means, stylistic techniques, translation decisions, and their impact on the perception of the text. In particular, it has been determined how graphic images, composition, and text placement influence the conveyance of its content. The study has identified biblical genres that are most susceptible to adaptation in graphic prose and the aspects of genre that change in such adaptation. The research has revealed new layers of meanings and ways in which graphic art influences the perception of biblical stories, religious-adventure comics, parables, and individual biblical quotations through the evaluation of the pragmatic effect achieved by such adaptation. Conclusions regarding the peculiarities of the development of the translation of religious texts after the adoption of Christianity and conclusions regarding the specific issues of cultural adaptation in the translation of biblical texts can serve as the basis for studies on the linguistic-cultural adaptation of sacred texts. The research materials can be used in teaching linguo-culturology, stylistics of the Italian language, lexicology, theory and practice of translation, and other related disciplines, as well as in the research practice of students when writing coursework and master’s theses.
