Essay

This thesis provides the results of integrative analysis of language means of Old Norse mythic concepts in present-day English and Swedish song discourses. The paper exercises the fundamental assumption that a language as a sign system functionsaccording to the universal mechanisms thus turning into a creative tool. Old Norse mythic concepts are identified as inchoative formations, around which alternative worlds and respective worldviews are developed in the context of pop culture of the XX-XXIcenturies. These mythic concepts, embodied by means of English and Swedish languages, outline the desired state of affairs in the projected realities and offer value and behavioural “navigation coordinates” for a representative of a particular subculture (both for musician / lyricist and for addressee–consumer of musical-verbal construct).
