Essay

The work examines the performing and composing work of the outstanding French-Canadian virtuoso pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin, which arouses the interest of a wide range of listeners and professional musicians. М. А. Hamelin’s works are performed at reputable piano competitions, and his concert and studio recordings receive positive reviews from the world’s leading music and critical publications and are awarded prestigious awards. However, certain aspects of the artist’s performing and composing activities have not yet received a sufficiently complete musicological understanding. The paper substantiates the hypothesis that the interest in the work of М. А. Hamelin is largely due to the vivid reflection in it of important trends of modern culture, such as the study of the musical heritage of the past, dialogicism, and the use of irony as a means of musical thinking. The methodological basis of the research is a set of ideas embodied in the aesthetic and philosophical concepts of postmodernism. However, since the concept of postmodernism covers a very wide range of sociological and artistic phenomena, philosophical ideas and cultural concepts, the presented paper suggests using the concept of dialogue of cultures tangent to postmodern. It is more substantive and allows you to narrow down the range of issues studied and specify the musical phenomena that serve as the research material. Using this concept allows you to focus on the implementation of the principle of play in the musical art. In the work of М. А. Hamelin it is reflected in the comparison of different historical styles within a single work and the specifics of the use of musical quotations.
