Essay

Clarifying the meaning of the term psalm, the psalm implies its distinction with the term psalm, which comes from the Greek. Ψαλμός ("singing to the accompaniment of a stringed plucked instrument") and is used to denote the genre and specific strophic form of Jewish and Christian lyrical prayer poetry. With this word the ancient translators transmitted the Hebrew expression "mizmor" (this is the name given to 57 psalms). The word comes from the verb "zamar" - to touch the strings, hence - a song or hymn performed with a stringed instrument (lute, harp, zither, etc.). The Greek term psalms has the same meaning.
