Essay

This thesis is devoted to the research of conversational principles in English and Chinese languages on the basis of the real corpus of conversations taken from live speech in the aspect of linguistic pragmatics. The research aims of this thesis are to achieve a deeper understanding of pragmatic principles used in different cultures through a comparative analysis of conversational principles developed in the linguistic pragmatics of Western countries and China; based on a contrastive study of speech acts in Chinese and English to develop the Relation Saving Principle, and to prove that this pragmatic principle determines the typical features of Chinese conversations and is inherent in English conversations.
