Bomko L. «The Key of Understanding» by Ioanikiy Galiatovskyi in the Context of Ukrainian Baroque Preaching

The dissertation is devoted to research of the collection "Key of Understanding" by Ioanikiy Galiatovsky in the context of Ukrainian baroque preaching – as a kind of discourse in its early and mature periods. Galiatovsky’s sermons are considered in the categories of tradition and novelty and are presented in the discourse of early and mature Baroque preaching. The genre-semantic, structural-compositional features of the style are singled out on the basis of a detailed textual analysis, and the rhetoric and hermeneutics of Ioanikiy Galiatovsky’s sermons are considered. The Baroque style established a new type of sermon in Ukrainian literature, which in terms of both form and content is not similar to Byzantine and ancient Ukrainian homiletic models. In the period of the greatest flourishing of the sermon genre, the collection “The Key of Understanding” by Ioanikiy Galiatovskyi symbolizes the peaks not only of individual creativity, but also of baroque preaching in general. Next to the same exemplary masters of the word, the preacher manages to maintain the position of primacy in the spiritual light of Ukrainian literature of the second half of the 17th century. The subordination of a large number of sources to the Holy Scriptures allows us to assert that baroque preaching rests on God's Word, which is most vividly presented in the presented authors. The figurative world of «The Key of Understanding» appears on the basis of a plurality of interpretive codes, the understanding of which the writer enshrines in the texts of his sermons. The expressive intellectual phenomenon of the Baroque literary tradition follows from the metaphorical strategy of Ioanikiy Galiatovskyi. The author uses metaphors and analogies from the field of environment and human experience, giving the spiritual essences a rational justification and professing the principle of ancient rhetoric – to explain the unknown through the known. The hermeneutic model of the four senses reveals the superiority of the spiritual method of interpretation. The hermeneutics of «The Key of Understanding» appears through the prism of the rhetoric of speech – in the «living word». The statement which is endowed with all the elements of rhetorical persuasion becomes a typical literary work of the 17th century like the whole text of the sermon, and in the receptive perspective opens a wide range of literary challenges. One of them is the discovery of the creative manner of Ioanikiy Galiatovskyi sermons.
