The dissertation is devoted to identifying the theoretical foundations and practical ways of implementing the recreational function of mass culture as a phenomenon of the socio-cultural space of the early twenty-first century on the example of cultural and sports institutions functioning in Ukraine as organizationally formalized social institutions of the recreational infrastructure of mass culture, to identify trends in their development as a component of the modern leisure industry.
It is proved that mass culture is the dominant cultural form in modern society, a functional analysis of the phenomena of mass culture is carried out, the essence of the leisure industry is clarified, the recreational potential of popular music and dance media culture is revealed, the cultural and sports institution is characterized as a social institution of recreational infrastructure, the recreational component in the training and pedagogical practices of cultural and sports institutions is investigated.
It is emphasized that mass culture in modern society is dominant due to the widespread use of communication technologies and is based on hedonistic, communicative, compensatory, creative principles that minimize excessive mental stress of the individual under the influence of growing information flows. Its main functions include the following: humanistic, communicative, cognitive, translational, informative, orientation, protective (adaptive) socializing, etc. The compensatory function is characterized in detail as the most striking manifestation of the recreational function aimed at reducing psychological stress. It is noted that the recreational function is inherent in any phenomenon of mass culture.
However, the entertainment industry is of great importance, as it has become the leading industry of the tertiary sector of the world economy (the first is raw materials, the secondary is manufacturing) at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It includes the music, dance, and fashion industries, whose format of operation characterizes them as media cultures. The recreational potential of the Ukrainian dance and music industries is a unique music and dance trend with no analogues in popular culture regarding a mass appeal.
The concept of recreational choreography, which is based on the relaxation effect, is the basis of dance styles, can be used for therapeutic and rehabilitation purposes and is part of music and dance pop culture, has been further developed: the study of the recreational functions of institutions and centres of mass culture; generalization of the world experience of the formation of musical pop culture and related choreographic vocabulary; the processes of inculturation of foreign models into national leisure practices; characterization of the state of integration of Ukrainian socio-cultural space into the global entertainment industry and other subcultural industries.
The theoretical significance of the results obtained is that for the first time in domestic cultural studies, the recreational component in the discursive practices of the postmodern socio-cultural space of Ukraine in general and the cultural and sports institutions, in particular, has been identified. The theoretical generalizations of the dissertation provide a methodological basis for further research on the socio-cultural nature of the recreational functions of art as a means of forming the physical image of a person, as well as the essential characteristics of subcultural phenomena that have been established and are evolving in the communication field of mass (popular) culture. The practical significance of the results obtained: they can be used in the practice of executive authorities that implement state policy in the field of culture, carry out organizational and legal regulation of cultural and sports institutions, as well as in the educational process of higher education institutions, in particular in general and special courses on cultural theory, sociology, art history, applied cultural studies, organization of cultural institutions, etc.
