Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the systematic study of productive prefix word-forming units in the plane of their structural-semantic and pragmatic aspects, the methodological basis of prefix verbs selected from humanities and natural English texts of the modern English language is described. In the scientific work, attention is focused on the analysis of structural, semantic, pragmatic and functional aspects of English prefix verbs with Germanic and Romance verb prefixes. The directions of their meaning-making internal potential, in semantic-structural and functional-pragmatic implementation, are determined. The implicit content of English prefix verbs in the direction from statics to dynamics is determined, the semantic mechanisms of meaning-making processes are revealed, which perform the functions of term-making models and help to reveal the deep mechanisms of the semantics in creating the prefix verbs in modern English-language texts. The outlined scientific research is determined by the general direction of modern linguistic works in lexicology, semasiology, and cognitology to identify linguistic and non-linguistic factors in the development and functioning the vocabulary of the language, professional English, in particular. The application of the basic semantic categories of meaning and senses made it possible to understand the essence of the prefix verb, taking into account its specialized meaning in the process of identifying the stable invariant meaning of the prefix verb in language paradigmatics (statics) and its various semantic variable senses in speech syntagmatics (dynamics). The study of the word-forming, term-forming potential of a prefixed professional verb from the point of view in modern linguistic paradigms has not yet been the subject of a special analysis, in particular, in clarifying the specifics and trends of English prefix term formation, which, due to its semantic change in the form and meaning of prefixes, lead to the enrichment of the terminological fund of the language. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the general focus of modern terminological research on the study of the structural-semantic and linguopragmatic organization of prefixed verbs in modern professional English, and therefore, consists in a systematic approach to the study of prefixed verbs that represent the terminological system of English-language texts in the humanities and natural sciences. For the first time in scientific research, an attempt has been made to investigate the prefix verb statically and dynamically, to trace both the specific and the most general trends inherent in the prefix verb as a special terminological concept. It is suggested that a significant number of productive borrowed and autochthonous prefixes, which are used for the formation of new English-language terms, is caused by the significant development of the branch terminology in the modern English language, the desire to mark and describe new phenomena and processes that occur within the limits of the modern English-speaking professional language. The practical value of the dissertation results lies in the possibility of using its main provisions and illustrative material in the educational process, in particular: in courses, lectures on lexicology, a special course on the word formation of the modern English language, branch terminology, compilation of explanatory dictionaries in special fields, etc. In the future, we see the attached registers of prefixes as a further addition to the complex study of prefix terms in the field of special sciences. The establishment of conceptual structures that determine the specifics of word-formation processes in English-language terminological systems and the comparison of resources and means of term formation in other Germanic languages is considered promising. We see that, used in scientific work, the research method will help to comprehensively cover the linguistic-cultural and linguistic-pragmatic aspects of other professional languages in various national variants of the modern English language. The conclusions obtained in the scientific work open up prospects for further research of prefixed verbs in various sectoral English-language terminological systems, explication of resources and means in the process of sense-making and term-making at the conceptual, cognitive and functional levels. The conducted research gives grounds to conclude that the development of innovative semantics of prefixed verbs-terms has been evolved according to the traditional universal laws of the English language. The process of isolating a stable semantic invariant of a prefixed verb makes it possible to explain its numerous and extraordinary senses not only in explanatory English dictionaries, but also in special English texts of branch spheres.
