The scientific problem of the presented dissertation is the understanding of the
competitive-festival movement of Volyn at the end of the 20th — beginning of the
21st century as a cultural phenomenon, a carrier of artistic traditions and means of
communication in the conditions of the socio-cultural landscape of Ukraine. Regional
art competitions and festivals offer a wide range of cultural events and activities, they
remain relevant and important for the development of creativity and performing arts,
as well as for strengthening cultural ties between regions. At the same time, the active
development of the competition and festival movement in the regional invariant is one
of the important signs of the modern national cultural revival of Ukraine. In this
context, turning to the competitive-festival movement of Volyn region at the turn of
the 20th -- 21st centuries opens wide opportunities for researching both national and
regional aspects of Ukrainian culture in terms of its integrity, acting as a peculiar and
at the same time organic component of it.
The work specifies the conceptual and categorical apparatus of the research, in
particular it is stated that the festival is a historically dynamic cultural phenomenon
that has a ritual and festive genesis and is a series of socio-cultural events of a cyclical
nature. The competition, in contrast to the festival, represents a historically stable (the
functions of the competition are unchanged) form of culture that has a game genesis

and essence and belongs to socio-cultural events of a cyclical nature. The competition,
like the festival, can have genre varieties and fulfills the role of a carrier of values of
certain socio-cultural strata.
Archival materials related to the history of the formation of the competitionfestival movement of Volyn have been put into scientific circulation, in particular,
documents of the Volyn Regional Council, archival materials of Volyn Regional
Scientific-Methodological Center of Culture, Volyn Regional Philharmonic, Igor
Stravinsky Volyn College of Culture and Arts, interviews, memories of organizers
and participants of competitions and festivals.
By organizing and analyzing a number of archival materials, interviews with
organizers and participants of contests and festivals, the cultural-historical and
communicative aspects of the most significant contests and festivals for Volyn, in
particular, the Music Festival "Stravinsky and Ukraine", the International Festival of
Ukrainian Folklore "Beregynia", were characterized. The International Festival
"Polissia Summer with Folklore", International Piano Competition "Chopin Spring",
International Competition of Bayanists and Accordionists "InterSvitiaz accomusic",
Lesia Ukrainka All-Ukrainian Choral Art Competition, All-Ukrainian Competition of
Pipe and Cymbal Performers "Volyn Hukovytsia", Oleksandr Nehoda All-Ukrainian
Competition of Performers on stringed instruments and others.
