Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of legitimized aggression in the professional activities of police officers. Based on the analysis of scientific approaches to studying the problem of aggressive behavior, its origins, types, and manifestations, it has been determined that aggression is a socio-psychological phenomenon that manifests itself in the violation of societal norms and is predominantly of a destructive nature. It has been established that the systematic use of aggression leads to the formation of aggressiveness – a stable personal quality that influences the character and typical behavior of the individual. A divergence of views among scientists regarding the causes of aggression has been identified, which are considered from biologizing, social, and situational concepts. It has been established that aggression is essentially an ambivalent emotion: on the one hand, it can have a destructive character, serving the need for self-realization and self-assertion, and on the other hand, aggression serves as a mechanism of psychological defense for the individual in complex or extreme life conditions. In such cases, aggression can be legitimized, as the protection of rights and safety may require the use of aggression, particularly in the field of law enforcement. It has been found that aggression in the professional activities of police officers contains both positive and negative aspects. Specifically, extreme conditions of professional activity, constant stress, and irregular work schedules can contribute to the emergence of destructive aggression, exacerbating conflict, reinforcing motives for punishment, causing harm, seeking revenge, and self-assertion. At the same time, it has been established that aggression positively influences the adaptation of police officers in situations of uncertainty and the ability to regulate activities, contributes to reducing tension levels, and accomplishing socially approved tasks. The author has elucidated the essence of the concept of legitimized aggression in the professional activities of police officers. The term "legitimized aggression" refers to the process of justifying the acceptability and justification of various forms of aggressive behavior by attributing to them a socially sanctioned (legitimate) status. It serves as a source of specific behavioral manifestations and is an effective means of achieving professional goals.
