The dissertation research examines the place of the magazine “Universum” in the information space and media sphere of Ukraine. Over the course of its thirty-year existence, the journal has established itself as a serious and responsible analytical publication, as a platform for in-depth and uncompromising discussions on the pressing and acute problems of Ukraine after the restoration of statehood. The paper establishes that scholars do not pay attention to the study of the activities of magazine-type publications, although there are some studies that are taken into account in the paper, both studies of modern media and periodicals of the past. The author also notes that «Universum» is the only magazine-type publication that has survived in the information space despite the difficult economic and political conditions, which is also the phenomenon of the publication. The work uses a fairly wide range of general scientific methods and approaches, which made it possible to form an adequate methodological basis for the dissertation. It is about the fact that journalism has been and remains an important social institution and profession in the age of modern information technologies, that only analytics will save traditional journalism from decline and degradation, that independent journalism is a sign and element of a democratic civil society, that a state position should be an indispensable basis for the functioning of any publication. The state position and national idea define the creative face of “Universum” magazine. The “Universum” magazine used various genres, a well-thought-out system of headings, and raised topics related to the most important spheres of state life: politics, military and security issues, economics, history and historical memory, and culture. This ensured both the completeness of national life and an adequate reflection of problems and problematic situations in the most important spheres of our life. It is found that the magazine «Universum» effectively realized the actual task of journalism – to analyze, predict, constructively solve complex contemporary problems of social development, to educate its audience to think independently, to extrapolate the experience of the past to modern and future life. The activities of «Universum» confirm the opinion of scholars that the only thing that can save a person is the emergence of analytical and information systems created by mass media specialists (journalists) on the basis of clear specialization. A natural conclusion about the effectiveness of the magazine's functioning is its thirty-year existence and the fact that analytics is a way to overcome information chaos, as well as a constructive solution to problems. The paper proves that analytical, systematic, problematic, predictive, and journalistic are the main features and characteristics of the «Universum's» style of functioning, a style that is determined and dictated by the current period of Ukrainian history. The experience of the magazine convinces us that the ideal formula for journalism is an analytical text in which reasoning is combined with the author's worldview, and the conclusions coincide with the historical imperatives of the event and its values, the ability to think logically is combined with psychological arguments, and all this is transformed into a journalistic presentation of the material, in which the authors (journalists, publicists, scientists, specialists) use different methods of cognition of reality and forms of reflection. The paper shows that from the very beginning the «Universum» positioned itself not only as a journal of political science, economics, science and culture, but also of futurology. This can be explained by the fact that there is a growing demand in society for knowledge about the future. However, prediction of the future (i.e., a certain historical perspective) is combined with prognostication, which concerns already existing problems and modern processes. It was found that the authoritative authors of the journal, analyzing certain problems, pointed not only to their causes, possible ways and means of solving them, but also predicted the emergence of dangerous risks and directions of negative development of problem situations. This is especially noticeable in publications on military, economic, and political topics. It has also been found that futurological predictions were realized on the pages of the journal not only in the field of science, but also in the political and journalistic spheres. The paper finds that the content of «Universum» includes topics and issues in the military, political, economic, cultural, and historical consciousness and memory spheres. The paper finds that the implementation of each of these problematic and thematic areas is based on a clearly defined conceptual framework, which was centered on the idea of statehood, national meanings and values, European orientation, as well as universal human values, and a well-tho
