Essay

The dissertation analyzes the formation and development of the concepts of “social media” and “social networks,” explores social media from the perspective of systemic theory, and describes user behavior on social media, particularly on the Reddit platform. It also discusses communication algorithms on Reddit and the implementation of emotional social exchange. The relevance of the study is driven by the high interest in social media in the academic environment and the continuous growth of the popularity of Reddit among users. The object of the study is to comment under publications on the Reddit platform. The subject is the specificity of interaction between users of online social media, the peculiarities of communication patterns, and communicative interaction. The empirical basis of the study comprises manually selected user comments under publications on Reddit from the period 2020–2023, represented by two groups: Comments on texts from the artistic discourse (in particular, creepypasta); Comments on news stories centered around high-profile events of the Russo-Ukrainian war. The propose of the work is to formulate a comprehensive understanding of the specificity of communicative interaction in social media to prove or disprove the hypothesis that by the nature of their implementation, these media replicate communication mechanisms in the real world. The scientific novelty is determined by the nature of the development of the topic related to a comprehensive analysis of the communicative specifics of the online platform Reddit and lies in the fact that for the first time, the theory of social exchange of emotions is applied to describe the models of communicative interaction on Reddit. The specifics of the communicative behavior of Reddit users are clarified. For example, in the communicative interaction of Reddit users in the “commenting” service under posts of artistic and news types, the author identifies patterns that allow us to talk about the similarity of communicative interaction of subjects in the online environment (in particular, on Reddit) and the real world.
