Essay

The analysis of the historical and pedagogical foundations of the researched problem demonstrates that the concept of a “master's degree” has evolved with a strong social dimension throughout history. While its meaning has shifted over time, the primary focus remained on recognizing the master's degree as a symbol of professional qualification, dignity, and the status of a specialist. Since the 19th century, the preparation and defense of a dissertation for obtaining a master's degree have been the central form of research work in higher education institutions in Ukraine. Key avenues for developing research skills and abilities included seminar classes that engaged with scientific content through reflection and the guidance of experienced professors; participation in scientific circles and societies that fostered the discussion of reports, debates, and scholarly exchanges; and the publication of collections of scientific works.
