Essay

The problem of living standard of urban population of the Right-bank Ukraine at the beginning of the XX century is investigated. For this purpose the author auses a significant number of archival materials, published sources and scientific literature. Complex research of life standard of urban population is carried out for the first time. The conditions of work, employment, working hours, wages and income of lower middle classes; changes of consumption structure and cost of goods and services; the activity of public organizations in the sphere of consumers' society, pension maintenance and charity; dynamics of demographic situation, sanitary state and medical aid; improvement of transport services and living conditions; increase of educational level of population and provision of cultural needs are analysed. It is emphasized that clerks, military men and entrepreneurs had the highest standard of life. Much attention is paid to that fact that the well-being of population living in the industrial well-de veloped Kyiv province was much more higher than that of lower middle classes of Podillya. Intercommunication between the political events and the population's well-being is shown.
