The dissertation deals with the main technological characteristics of the old woodworking expressive means:contour carving, pricking with a sharp instrument, grooving, counterrelief carving. Most of the old techniques are not widely adopted in the modern art. The ornamental motifs of the XVII -the beginning of the XX century works represented the age-old symbols. The names of carvers, who worked in the first half of the XIX century and stuck to the old methods are fond out. The dissertation outlines the sources of the modern wood and metal art traditions and the innovatory tendencies of the Shkriblyaks, M. Mehedenyuk and V. Devdyuk..
