Essay

The analysis and systematization of quasidefinitions used in four-volume Rus-sian Language Dictionary (Moscow, 1981 - 1984) have been carried out in the dis-sertation. The status of quasidefinitions as an informationally significant component of the dictionary entry has been proved. Productive and non-productive types of qua-sidefinitions have been singled out and classified taking into account their structural peculiarities and frequency of their usage. The ways of optimization of certain types of quasidefinitions have been suggested which provide unification, avoiding ambigu-ity and redundancy in the explanation of words.
