Essay

Research subjects: castor bean. Research objectives: establishment of influence of F1 selection in of microgametophytes with high germination and pollen tube growth rate and tolerant to high temperature on the F2 generation structure of sporophytes. Methods: microgametophytic selection, genetic analysis. Theoretical and practical results: the relationship between gametophyte and sporophyte thermotolerance as well as between pollen tube growth rates and early ripeness was established. The technique of selection of valuable genotypes at the level of pollen was developed. The genetic control of differences among some traits was established and for some of them significant geterosis effect was noticed. Novelty of introduced: for the first time in castor bean the relationship between thermotolerance of pollen and leaf water preservation potential as well as between pollen competitive ability and duration of main vegetation stages was established. It was shown that microgametophytic sel ection in castor bean could be used as a way of purposeful change of genetic structure in the sporophytis population. Implementation degree: the drought-resistant and early ripening linear material was developed. The ornamental castor bean variety "Serenada" was created. Effectiveness: acceleration of selection for drought resistance and early ripeness at the expense of faster selection of valuable genotypes at the level of pollen. Sphere, sector of implementation: castor bean breeding
