Essay

The work is devoted to the study of the archeological remains in the site of the ancient town Kalos Limen from the 1st half of the IV BS until the date of its destruc-tion in the beginning jf the II AD. The archeological researches enable cextainly to locate the Kalos Limen at the site of theTchernomorskaya Bay in the Nord - Western end of Crimea. The main periods of town,s life are outliened as follovs: 1) Ionian period (1 st half - 3d quarter of the IV BC); 2) Dorian (Chersonesian) period ( the last of the 3 d quarter of the IV BC; 3) Scythian period ( 2d half of the II BC to the beginning of the II AD). During the 1st and 2d periods the Kalos Limen was a tipical ancient greek town. The changing of the basic ethnos is appeared in the planning and the architec-tural design of the town. Its harbour was one of the most important centre of the cereal export from the Western coast of the Crimea during second and third periods of its history. The favorable economic and strategic location of the town explain its central role in the political and economical history of the Tarchankut peninsula.
