Essay

The dissertation is dedicated to the problems of the Neolithic Age of Volhyn and Volhynian Polissya. It was established that the population of the Linear Band Pottery Culture (LBPC) had lived on the territory of Volhynian plateau. The occupation with farming was testified by the impressions on ceramics of caryopsides of wheat, barley, peas, vetch, millet, horny parts of mattocks, corn crushers, grinding stones and flinty brasses to sickles. Cattle breeding was testified by the bones of a cow, a pig, a sheep, a goat and a horse. Hunting was of subsidiary importance. Monuments of LBPC are divided into three periods: early ("pre-note") (Rovno), middle ("note") (Holyshev II, Bayev etc.) and late (Hnydava, Klevun). The time of this culture in Volhyn is the 2nd half of the 5th century B.C. - the first quarter of the 4th century B.C. From the 2nd half of the 5th B.C. till the end of the 3rd century B.C. Volhynian Polissya was inhabited by the carriers of Volhynian neolithic culture who were engaged in hunting, fishing and picking. The collections of tools made of flint indicate the considerable development of hunting. The beginning of the transition to the farming was noticed from the impressions of caryopsides of wheat, barley, peas and vetch on the ceramics from the settlements Roznichy, Novosilky, Obolon, Konik and Krushnicky. The settlements belong to three periods: early (Roznichy, Novosilky), middle (Novosilky, Obolon and others) and late (Vitkovichy, Mirabely).
