Essay

The object of study - the development of the Ukrainian national and cultural movement in the system of social factors and the Ukrainian-speaking press issued on the territory of Naddnipryanskoy Ukraine in 1907-1914. The idea of the paper is to analyze not only national but cultural process in Ukraine, to discover its orientation, its problems in contradicting conditions of 1907-1914 and to investigate the interaction in correlation: movement and press, press and movement. The methods used in the research are: problematic-chronological, comparative-historical, statistical-analytical and the method of generalization. It is the first time when the development of the Ukrainian national and cultural development of 1907-1914 has been analyzed thoroughly in the interaction with the publicistic orientation of the Ukrainian-speaking press. The development was aimed at solving problems of Ukrainization and democratization of education and the formation of selfawareness of Ukrainian people. The characteristic features and peculiarities of the development of educational, publishing and enlightenment movements of 1907-1914 were studied in details as well as the difficulties which prevented from the development of these movements. There were analyzed the problems of book-publishing development, periodicals, teachers' unions functioning, enlightenment communities, their interaction with the Ukrainian-speaking press, the contribution of the latter in the activization of the national and cultural movements of Ukrainians proceed from ideological orientation of the Ukrainian-speaking press and information published there. The influence of the press on the organization and orientation of liberation struggle of Ukrainian people was determined.
