Essay

The dissertation deals with the complex study between intra- and extralingual (historical, cultural, political, social, ethnical, confessions) factors in the process of borrowing Latin lexemes by the Ukrainian language among other European languages. Latin borrowings are revealed within the thematic groups of social, political and juridical lexicons and the peculiarities of their representation in authorised Ukrainian lexicographic sources. Important genetic (etymological) and historic sources of Latin borrowings in Slavic languages have been described. Principal tendencies and regularities of semantic evolution of Latin etymons in the language-recipient have been revealed. The peculiarities of foreign loan words functioning have been defined.
