The dissertation investigates the educational activities of the Orthodox clergy in the XIX-th. - beginning of the XX th. centuries in Ukraine, gives the general description of church elementary schools for people and special spiritual educational establishments (colleges and seminaries), offers a division into periods of their activities inside the investigated period of time and gives the estimation of their role in the Ukrainian population education bussines. Interaction between the Spiritual department and the secular establishments, particularly zemstwos, in organizing the educational system is revealed; the place of literacy and Sunday schools in educational clergy activities is determined; endeavor of clergy to upgrade its educational establishments to correspond with up-to-date demands is analized.
