The dissertation is the first research reveals a complex analysis of the Ukrainian provincial town as a political and sociocultural phenomenon. The level of the political and social mobilization of the citizens before the Ukrainian revolution has been studied. The role of the structural changes of the executive authorities in the socialpolitical life of towns has been elucidated, manifestations of the national liberation movement and the political self-representation of citizens in March 1917 - April 1918 have been characterized. The specific features of the constituents, that defined a revolutionary subculture of a town, have been determined, the influence of the political and sociocultural factors on the development of the Ukrainian national identity has been determined.
