Essay

The thesis analyzes the mental foundation of the Ukrainian literary language in the context of philosophical and linguistic theories. In the paper two different meanings of the basic notion of mentality is investigated. The first one is mentality itself which means a worldview and the other is mindset as prior behaviors and choices that people or groups continue to adopt or accept because of a set of assumptions unconsciously held by them within the group. It is shown that mentality as a literary language is always forming and constantly changing. Each historical epoch leaves its mark in the language, important historical events can change the language picture of the world. However language changes arise primarily from changes in the national mentality. It is clarified that the national literary language was formed in Ukraine in twenties of the twentieth century, namely during the so-called "Ukrainianization". Literary language is cultivated form of popular language, serving oral and written to all spheres of cultural and social life of the people. Literary language is the language of the national legislation, the language of education, science, the arts, the media. It has immutable rules.
