Dissertation deals with the pragmatic aspect of occasional words which are functioning in Russian-language periodicals published in Ukraine for the last six years. The pragmatic component of semantic structure of any occasionalism consists of expressiveness, evaluation and emotionality. Being a means of influence an occasional word is aimed at fulfilling such communicative needs of the speaker as: evaluation, expressing emotions and feelings, irony, creation of comic effect. The author describes modern trends in using occasionalisms, analyses the spheres of social life that are considered to be the active suppliers of new words. Occasional word-formation reflects the process of the Russian language adaptation to the new needs of communication.
