Essay

The object of study - the war's history of Slobidsky first Cossack regiments in the second half of XVII century - the half of XVIII century. The purpose of research is determination of the reasons of Slobidsky regiments occurrence, factors, that during a long time influenced on the development of warfare here, features of this development and place of Slobidsky regiments in military structure of steppe borders of the Russian state of that time. The methods used in the research are: historical-comparative, synchronous, diachronous and structurally-functional analysis. The dissertation is devoted to the development of warfare in Slobidsky Cossack regiments in the second half of XVII - the first half XVIII century. It was assured that the progress of warfare in the above-mentioned region was going on in the channel of Ukrainian Cossack military tradition though it had some distinctions. The dominating role of cavalry and fortifications intended to stop the Tatar invasions into Slobidsky Ukraine has been proved. An attempt was made in the dissertation to show the influence of the military factor on the Slobidsky Ukraine colonization process. Different changes occurring in the Cossack warfare during more than a century caused by the absorption of Slobidsky regiments by the Russian war machine have been investigated as well. Also the author have analysed such problems as military organization, recruitment, provision, arms of the service and armament of Slobidsky Cossacks. Much attention have also been payed to the history of wars and armed conflicts in which Slobidsky Cossack troops took part as well-trained and experienced irregular cavalry.
