Essay

The thesis investigates the biographical prerequisites and evolution of the image of Polish-Ukrainian borderland in prose by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz of the period between wars in the context of theoretical, cultural and historical problems of "Kresy" (borders). The differences between the reception of borderland as the immediate reality in "kyivan" - and as the object of recollection of the "small home land" in the later periods are traced. It analyses the poetics, chronotopos, ideological and aesthetical problems of such works as "Escape for Baghdad", "Autumn Fun", "Zenobia. Palmura", "Moonrise", "The Red Shields", "Italian Tales". The borderland is represented there as unique sacralized topos, the territory of peaceful co-existence of different cultural traditions, idealized prototype of the europian-mediterranean civilization, which has been provided with vital dionysian energy by nature.
